Your effort doesn't mean ANYTHING

I was told many times in school that participating was more important than winning.

School tries to tell you that your effort is important, "Just do your best, give it your all and that's the most important thing." And it's a lie.

Effort doesn't matter in reality. What matters in the end are the results.

There's a man named - Harrison Schmitt, see if the name rings a bell.

If it doesn't ring a bell, I don't blame you. It didn't ring a bell for me. But it turns out the man was on the moon, he was one of the few, the 12th man who was there.

Yet, almost nobody knows who he is, not many people even know the 3rd person who landed there.

If it's the moon, the Olympics, or business - no one cares who comes in 12th or 6th. We care about the 1st person, sometimes about the 2nd, but mostly it's the winners. Results are the name of the game, so why would we care about effort?

Whenever people ask me - "I worked really hard, I've done all this and did it for 2 years, what's wrong?"

I tell them that:

The universe doesn't care about how many hours you put in, it cares about the results you get.

  • It's not like you're entitled to something, because you put in X amount of time.

  • It's not like the universe owes you something. We always look at results and actual achievements in the real world.

  • It's not like in the workplace, where you can walk up to your boss and say "Hey, boss, I now have 5 years of experience, I deserve a raise" - no, you don't. You deserve a raise based on results, accomplishments, and actual things that you do in the world.

Anyone can put in the hours, it's you putting value into the hours.
